People would always admonish us before we jumped into the deep end that is dog ownership: “It’s like having another kid.”
Now that it’s been half a year with our little (now bigger) Harry, I would beg to differ. The main difference between having a dog and a child is that, with the former, there doesn’t really appear to be any gradual release of responsibility. In other words, I expect all of my children to grow older every year, to facilitate and instruct them to learn new things and gain independence, but I don’t think dogs are wired that way. Harry’s not going to move out, get married, or even total my car (actually, he might total my car, but using different methods).
This dog is just going to be completely dependent on us forever, for everything. It’s rather scary, and kind of cool at the same time.
